What’s the difference between Trios 4 and Trios 3?

 

In terms of the core scanning capability, Trios 4 is essentially the same as the Trios 3, but with a bigger battery (if wireless), new scanning tips, and caries detection. During the exhibition, we were told by a sales rep that the Trios 4 is faster and more accurate than the Trios 3, but we couldn’t find anything to support that claim.

After doing some online digging and looking up relevant patents, we are convinced that the Trios 4 is a rehashed Trios 3 with more bells and whistles. Yes, the fluorescence detection was interesting and the infra-red diagnostics was pretty cool, but I would’ve like to see more improvement on the scanning latency and stability issues.

The Trios 3, the Trios 4 and the CEREC Omnicam are tied at #2 on our list. In terms of clinical efficiency, Trios 4 continues the 3Shape legacy of great scanners. As a Class B scanner, 3Shape’s biggest advantage, in my opinion, is actually not just its superb scanner, but also the sheer number of clinical indications covered by their CAD software and modules. The best part is that for €10,000 less, you can get essentially the same scanning experience with the Trios 3.

Yes, TRIOS 3 and TRIOS 4 are available as wired and wireless configurations with individual item numbers.

• How many batteries are included in the TRIOS 4?

TRIOS 4 comes with 4 batteries in comparison to TRIOS 3 which comes with 3 batteries.

• Does TRIOS 4 scanner come with a handle?

No. TRIOS 4 comes as a pen grip configuration.

• Does TRIOS 4 require a PC with a bigger graphics card?

No. TRIOS 4 has been designed to be fully functional with the same computers (graphics cards) as TRIOS 3. Please find the PC catalog in the 3Shape TRIOS Product Catalogue.

• Will TRIOS 4 be able to send it to Invisalign in the EU?

While TRIOS 4 is a new design, the underlying scan quality, method and format are identical to that of TRIOS 3. Accordingly, it is expected that Invisalign will be able to accept TRIOS 4 scans from the start. Having said that, the decision to accept scans from any scanner is up to Align to decide.

The TRIOS 4 smart tips are a new type of tips enabled with TRIOS 4. This new generation of tips features:

• instant-heat technology which enables the system to be scan-ready in seconds
• increased battery life with an additional 30% to 45 min scan time
• intelligent use count.

There will be two types of TRIOS 4 smart tips:

• A smart tip for 3D color scan and surface caries detection aid (fluorescence scan)
• Smart IR (Infrared) Transillumination imaging tip for interproximal caries aid.

Both tips are reusable and autoclavable.
